In November 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper presented her dear friend with a red hat and a copy of the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph for her 55th birthday. Friends of Sue Ellen's expressed an interest in receiving the identical gift. In April 1998 Sue Ellen and her four friends dressed in purple outfits and red hats went out for tea. They had so much fun that they dubbed themselves the "Red Hat Society" and decided to continue getting together in those colors for the purpose of nothing more than a good time.Younger sisters who have yet to turn 50 are affectionally known as Pink Hatters and dress in lavender outfits and pink hats. Together the joys of aging gracefully are celebrated.
